What is so important about play?

Play is a central role in children’s learning and development. Play gives children opportunities to explore, build social skills, problem solve, develop skills and learn about themselves and others in their community. Play allows children to enquire about their world around them as educators use teachable moments as learning opportunities when a child is engaged in play.

Educators carefully scaffold children’s learning through play by creating opportunities for children to extend on their learning and support them in their interests to become confident and capable by allowing time for children to repeat and fine tune skills that they develop.
